Historical Background of Townships

(Resource, Township Officials of Illinois)

Township Government was established in 1636 in Providence, Rhode Island.  It is the oldest existing form of government that continues to serve the North American Continent.  Prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, township government had already been in existence for 140 years.

Voters were given the opportunity to adopt Township Government in 1848 through the Illinois Constitution.  The first township governments began operation by 1850.  At present, 85 out of 102 Illinois counties utilize the township form of government.  More than 8 million citizens are served by the 1,432 townships.
